- W1497499629 abstract "Electron cytochemical studies of the breakdown of the intersegmental muscles of silkmoths reveal that the percent cross-sectional area covered by lysosomes increases 4-fold as breakdown begins and another 6-fold during the period of lysis. The lysosomes digest sodium β-glycerophosphate at acid pH, but none of several other substrates tested. In later stages of digestion, autophagic vacuoles are seen. Although elongate structures are sometimes seen in the lysosomes, myofilaments appear to be digested external to these organelles. Mitochondria shrink and are rapidly destroyed, but nuclei apear normal until degeneration is well advanced. Late degenerative changes appear to involve budding off of remaining cytoplasm, leaving behind only pycnotic nuclei. Hemocytes are present at all stages, but do not traverse the basement membrane or otherwise take an active role in lysis." @default.
