- W1497591838 abstract "This chapter describes the reception of Ephrem in the Syriac and modern western worlds, and in the medieval world of Christendom. The first part of the chapter is subdivided into three sections on the person of Ephrem, his poems and his prose. Ephrem's poetry is didactic, and what he taught was theology. It is impossible to separate the reception of his poems from that of his theology; both were chiefly received in the Syriac churches. The second part traces through the centuries the reception of Ephrem's numerous madrashe (“doctrinal hymns”) and less numerous memre. The final part deals with the reception of Ephrem's unique Commentary on Genesis (GenCom). It also deals with the Greek Fathers of the fourth and fifth centuries, with the sixth-century Romanos, with liturgical drama and with the pseudepigraphic corpus called “the Greek Ephrem.” Some of the Greek Ephrem exists in Melkite, or Palestinian, Aramaic." @default.
