BERMAN has given over one million dollars since 1997 to two Universities in San Diego and to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in order to establish two chairs in general semantics and an institute. Dr. Berman endowed the Sanford I. Berman Chair in Language and Human Communication at the University of California at San Diego in 1998, the Sanford I. Berman Institute for Effective Communication and General Semantics at San Diego State University in 1997, and the Dr. Sanford I. Berman Professorship of Public Discourse and General Semantics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 1999. Students at these three universities, numerous citizens, and Eureka Fellows, who serve as leaders of nonprofit foundations in the San Diego area, now have access to university level instruction in general semantics because of Dr. Berman's gifts. Dr. Berman's lasting generosity ensures that many students and citizens will discover general semantics through introductory and advanced courses, public lectures and workshops, public seminars, general semantics resource center, graduate education, and publications. His endowments will enable future generations of general semantics scholars and students to survey and use general semantics in creative ways to improve human communication. Dr. Berman, in addition to his work as an author and university lecturer, has also had successful career as stage hypnotist under the name of Dr. Michael Dean. His journey from a dollar an hour singing bartender to earning his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and his master's degree from Columbia University to becoming generous and successful entertainer, business man, author and educator so far has taken five decades. During this journey, Dr. Berman also earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Students at Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Chicago, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and San Diego State University have benefited from Dr. Berman's insight and instruction. Dr. Berman emphasizes the presentation of general semantics at the factual, non-verbal, extensional levels in order to reach students more effectively. He currently serves as part-time professor at SDSU. His influence will continue through his writings, guest lectures, audio and video tapes, and teaching. He noted, want to write books so I can leave something to be passed on to future generations after I'm gone. Books by Dr. Berman include Words, Meanings and People, The Closed Mind, How to Lessen Misunderstandings, and Why Do We Jump to Conclusions? He edited Logic and General Semantics. He has also created over 100 audio tapes on motivation and general semantics. SDSU and the Institute of General Semantics have complete set of videotape lectures from Dr. Berman's The Power of Language course. His present works focus on motivational theories and general semantics.
