- W1497975928 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the physiology and molecular biology of P450c21 and P450c17. Using the tools of molecular biology, significant knowledge has been gained on the function and structure of P450c17 and P450c21—two similar enzymes engaged in steroid hormone synthesis. Both enzymes share similar properties regarding their structure, intracellular location, substrate specificity, tissue distribution, and mode of regulation of gene expression. Yet small differences do exist. For example, P450c17 possesses two enzymatic activities in one protein molecule, rendering its enzymology more complex. In addition, slightly different functions (synthesis of sex hormones for P450c17 versus mineralocorticoid for P450c21) also require distinct expression pattern and mode of regulation for these two enzymes. The adrenal and gonads use different signaling pathways to regulate the expression of these two enzymes. One protein, steroidogenic factor-1 (SF1), which is a member of the orphan steroid receptor family, is essential for the transcriptional regulation of steroidogenic genes. Yet the molecular detail for the regulation of these two genes during development, by hormones, or for tissue specific distribution is still lacking. More in vivo work also needs to be done to compliment the data obtained through cell culture studies." @default.
