- W1498342015 abstract "The Royal Geographical Society recently had Hereford Map brought London for repairs and cleaning and then restored it Cathedral in a fine new oak case. At same time Society had map examined thoroughly and photographed for reproduction. The present publication is result. The original is largest (64 x 54 inches) and perhaps best-known medieval world map now in existence. It has been reproduced a number of times since late eighteenth century (notably by Konrad Miller in I896) but never as clearly and on as large a scale (nine-tenths of original) as now. An inscription in Norman-French in lower left-hand corner reads: let all who have this history, or shall hear, or read, or see it, pray Jesus in God for pity on Richard of Haldingham and of Lafford who has made and drawn it, that joy in Heaven be granted him. The map is circular and centered on Jerusalem, with east at top. Asia occupies eastern half, Africa southwestern segment, and Europe northwestern. Besides coast lines, map shows rivers, mountain ranges, isolated mountains, many town symbols of varied design, an abundance of town names, and some 35 or 40 vigorous and entertaining drawings of fabulous monsters, part human, part beast. Mr. Crone develops a strong and clearly reasoned argument that the remote origin of Hereford Map was a world map which was extant in fourth or fifth on which numerous towns were later inserted to show routes and journeys of Apostles, this material being taken from written sources resembling Antonine Itinerary and Peutinger Map. At same time a good deal of Biblical detail was added. Still later, further revisions and alterations were made bring map into closer accord with contemporary religious ideas, e.g. placing of Paradise in east, and ofJerusalem in centre. In essentials, a map almost identical with Hereford Map was in existence by I IOO A.D. ... If we neglect time lag in its production and regard it as representative of late eleventh century, we have in it a summary of medieval ideas in which their indebtedness Roman world is most plainly discernible. But this indebtedness was not absolute. In however halting and imperfect a manner, it demonstrates also in its attempts provide a more accurate portrayal of certain countries and indicate contemporary routes that practice of cartography was not entirely dead.-J.K.W." @default.
