- W1498905171 abstract "This chapter reviews the behavioral, physiological, and other responses which have been identified as useful parameters in identifying pain in cattle, sheep, and goats. The advent of α-2 agonists in the 1970s and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the 1980s stimulated interest in the assessment and alleviation of pain in ruminants and encouraged veterinarians to use analgesics when undertaking surgical procedures or when treating painful conditions. The clinical tools for the identification of pain in ruminants include observation of posture, movement, and other behaviors, palpation of specific tissues or organs, listening for specific pain-related sounds, and assessment of clinical signs. Equipment that facilitates the collection of behavioral and physiological data and the analysis of such data will improve our assessment of pain, as will the ongoing developments in analgesics." @default.
