- W1499171043 abstract "1. The presence of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in the peritoneal cavity of the mouse leads to an increased intraperitoneal accumulation of intravenously administered I131-labeled protein. This change can be demonstrated within 30 minutes after the inoculation of the tumor cells.2. The amount of labeled material accumulated is a function of the number of tumor cells inoculated, over the range of 2–20 × 106 cells. There is an increase of 0.25 per cent of total injected activity at 1 hour after inoculation for every 106 tumor cells.3. This accumulation is a local phenomenon, involving only the peritoneal cavity. Cell-free ascitic fluid alone does not induce such extra accumulation, nor do injected hepatic cells. A similar, but transient, effect can be induced by the nonspecific cellular irritant, Fuller's earth.4. Tumor cells lysed with distilled water are also incapable of this effect. It would seem, therefore, that the whole, and presumably living, tumor cell must be present to induce this accumulation.5. The presence of Ehrlich ascites tumor cells in the peritoneal cavity of the mouse leads to a small but significant retention there of I131-labeled serum protein after its intraperitoneal injection.6. Partial blockade of the lymphatics by carbon particles significantly increases the amount of labeled protein accumulated in the peritoneal cavity of normal mice, but does not increase the amount of activity accumulated by tumor-bearing animals.7. The liver lymphatics apparently do not contribute appreciably to the increased accumulation of labeled protein in the peritoneal cavity in the presence of ascites tumor cells; accumulation of label is within normal limits in tumor-bearing mice after removal of 70 per cent of the liver.8. The arguments for attributing ascitic fluid accumulation to lymphatic blockade and possible mechanisms for such blockade are discussed." @default.
