- W149941963 abstract "A tremolithic asbestos belonging to the amphibole group was found to perform better than silica gel, glass wool, cellulose or cork in preparing a column impregnated with ammonium phosphotungstate for the separation of Cs and Rb. A glass column 5 mm internal dmameter and 30 mm high was filled with an asbestos suspension in 1 M NH/sub 4/ NO/sub 3/. The column was then treated wtth a 0.2 M solution of phosphotungstic acid followed by a 0.3 M solution of NH/sub 4/ NO/sub 3/. The phosphotungstate salt formed is retained strongly by the asbestos fibers. The Rb/sup 86/and Cs/sup 134/tracers were adsorbed onto the column from a 1.0 M HNO/sub 3/ solution. The Rb/sup 86/ tracer is first eluted with 1.0 M NH/sub 4/ NO/sub 3/, and Cs/sup 134/ is eluted with a 6.0 M NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/ solution. A clear separation of Rb and Cs is obtained in 40 to 45 minutcs. Cs and Rb can also be separated b'.- tmpregnating the column with ammonium silicomolybdate, but since this salt is more soluble in NH/sub 4/NO/sub 3/ solution than ammonium phosphotungstate, it is slowly removed from the column during elution, Ammonium silicotungstate was also found to be unsuitable becausemore » of its high solubility in ammonium nitrate solutions, (TTT)« less" @default.
