- W1499688851 abstract "This PhD project takes a social informatics approach to investigate information and communication technologies associated with online music access and use. Being an ethnography, it contributes to the literature and to theory as a qualitative interpretive ethnographic study using a variety of methods to study the use of online music. This research will inform the design of new online music systems. ActorNetwork Theory and the Work System Method were used to inform the data analysis, and the qualitative results contribute to an emerging research area. Students are the music users at the centre of this study. Musicians and a number of industry stakeholders have also informed the study. Through twenty semi-structured interviews and three focus groups, music users shared their experiences of using a range of online technologies to access and use digital music. Also through interviews, musicians (five) and music industry stakeholders (ten) gave their perspectives on the current state of the online music industry in Australia, and how the emergence of digital distribution has changed the way music reaches music users. Additionally, observations of an online community contribute to an understanding of online music access and use. A1, an underground file sharing community was observed over 120 days; with Apple’s wellknown iTunes Music Store being used as a reference point for discussion. Studies about online music access and use within a technology context are rare, and few empirical studies have been published. Introduction The evolution of technology has seen a move to access digital music over the Internet, moving from the more traditional option of compact discs (CDs) purchased from physical stores, to using online music stores, online communities and peer-to-peer networks. There are many ways for people to purchase music through these new online mediums, as well as varying options for accessing free music. This study aims to understand the online technologies used to access and use music, some of which are secretive, underground and illegal. Therefore, the appropriate ethical clearance for this research (GU Protocol Number ICT/20/06/HREC) has been given. Using Social Informatics as a way to investigate the role of information and communication technologies, this paper presents an ethnography of online music access and use. The Work System Method (Alter, 2006) is used for evaluating music systems and Actor-Network Theory (Callon and Latour, 1981) is used to explore activities and relationships in the music network. Studies about online music access and use within a technology context are rare, and few empirical studies have been published. This research contributes to the literature and to theory as a qualitative interpretive ethnographic study using a variety of methods to study the access and use of online music.
