The identification of factors influencing the levels of plant homologous recombination may lead to improved precision in plant genetic engineering. Growing sequence databases reveal plant genes encoding proteins similar to those involved in homologous recombination in other organisms. This evolutionary conservation should accelerate the deciphering of elements of the plant homologous recombination pathway and help define limiting factors. The first such factor was recently determined and characterized at the molecular level through the isolation of an Arabidopsis mutant displaying DNA-damage hypersensitivity. The mutant is affected in a gene related to the structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) protein family and shows a defect in intrachromosomal recombination in somatic cells." @default.
