- W1503293065 abstract "Razlogova, Elena. The Listener's Voice: Early Radio and American Public. Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2011. 224 pp. $39.95. In contrast to critics who might claim a relentless, homogenizing, top-down mass culture has dominated American society for past 100 years, Elena Razlogova joins other scholars who document ways individuals have literally and figuratively refashioned elements of mass culture to suit their needs. The Listener's Voice, which is based on her 2003 dissertation, draws upon a significant amount of original research to make this claim and argues that authences were critical components in making of radio. This is not a new perspective among cultural historians, and a number of previous scholars have invoked argument in relation to radio history, including Lizabeth Cohen, Cliff Doerksen, Kathy Newman, and Bruce Lenthall. But if larger argument is familiar, Razlogova offers an impressive amount of archival research to flesh out details. The forty-four pages of notes are a veritable road map for radio historians, citing all of significant archives pertain to first decades of broadcasting. Many readers will be surprised to discover just how many fan letters from 1920s and 1930s have survived in various locations. These were written to individual stations, writers, or sponsors, and she estimates she read thousands of them. While book contains some instances in which producers altered content or storylines in response to feedback, larger goal of this work is to reconstruct the ways ordinary Americans conceived and enacted their relationship to big institutions. With nascent medium broadcasting in 1 920s, Razlogova argues listeners were more willing to express opinions about appropriate relationship between this new form of media and society. The backdrop for this discussion of America's moral economy is current disruption caused by online forms of content distribution. The study is arranged in a traditional, chronological fashion, spanning 1920s to early 1950s, when radio refashioned itself in response to television. The earliest chapters are strongest, and it is easiest to see reciprocity between listeners and producers at this time. Among other topics discussed, Razlogova charts evolution of boxing coverage (with listeners preferring a mixture of artifice and reality), interaction between soap opera writers and fans, and listeners' growing dissatisfaction with network radio in general. …" @default.
