These experiences were both in private psychiatric treatment of patients with psychosomatic disorders, and as psychiatric consultant to a university hospital psychosomatic seminar attended by the medical residents. Many colleagues, both internists and psychiatrists, agree that an overwhelming number of patients referred for psychiatric care because of psychosomatic illnesses do not make the initial contact with the psychiatrist.
