- W1504894910 abstract "This chapter describes long-lasting changes after perinatal exposure to antidepressants. A great interest has arisen in the last fifteen years in the possible effects of psychotropic drugs on the behavioral development of offspring. Instead of inducing gross physical alterations, the effects of drugs can be more subtle and neurochemical changes can be observed in progeny without apparent morphological alterations. The functional consequences of perinatal administration of drugs are the subject of functional neuroteratology or behavioral teratology. The purpose of behavioral teratology is the detection of those drugs that can induce subtle deleterious effects on progeny. The mechanism(s) involved in the clinical effectiveness of antidepressant drugs is not well known but all of these drugs share some effects on different monoamine receptors of the rat brain upon chronic administration. Behavioral and neurochemical changes were studied in 25-day-old rats acutely treated or prenatally exposed to typical or atypical antidepressants. In general, the neurochemical and behavioral changes after prenatal exposure of rats to antidepressants are more marked and longer-lasting than those induced by chronic treatment of adult rats." @default.
