- W150613503 abstract "A large job tenure effect in the Japanese labor market is considered as an evidence for the accumulation of firmspecific human capital and long-term employment. Numerous empirical studies have found a large job-tenure effect. In this paper, I estimate a wage equation controlling for the occupation tenure and show that one-third of the total job tenure effect can be attributed to the occupation tenure effect. Hashimoto and Raisian (1985) find that the earnings of Japanese male workers increase more rapidly with an extended tenure than those of their American counterparts. Mincer and Higuchi (1987) showed that wage-tenure profiles are steeper for Japanese workers than for American workers, and the differential in the turnover of workers between the two countries can be explained by the differences in the steepness of the wage-tenure profiles. They estimate a standard wage equation by controlling for the job tenure and the overall labor market experience; however, this equation does not control for the occupation tenure. I estimate a wage equation controlling for not only the overall labor market experience and job tenure but also the occupation tenure. For this purpose, the Survey of Working Persons 2000, which was conducted by the Institute of Recruit Works, is used. The data from this survey pertains to self-reported occupation tenures for three-digit occupations. This variable is used along with job tenure and overall labor market experience. The results indicate that the occupation tenure effect on wages reduces the job tenure effect by one third, and the job tenure effect is overestimated because of omitting the occupation tenure. The next section reviews some preceding studies on occupation tenure effect. In section 3, an empirical framework is presented and the data that is used is also described. The results of the estimation are presented in section 4; the final section states the concluding remarks." @default.
