- W1506771251 abstract "The top performers under $1 billion in assets racked up impressive numbers mainly by generating more revenue while holding costs even The year 2000 started with the entire country holding its breath at midnight. We wanted to see if we would be able to avoid technological calamity as the Y2K bug had its day. It ended in much the same way, but the source of our anxiety became economic calamity instead. With everything from roller coaster stock markets and Fed rate cuts to one of the most bizarre presidential elections in history, the financial services industry--and consumers--had plenty to react to. All things considered, banks made out pretty well. Deposit levels rose and alleviated some margin and liquidity pressures, regulatory changes had smaller than expected immediate competitive impact, and consumers became wary of dot-com banks and online trading. As a result, community banks were able to continue generating profits and expanding their businesses. There is little doubt that banking will continue to become more challenging as the industry and the country are faced with further economic and political changes, and performance expectations have a habit of moving in only one direction. However, one thing is unlikely to change--despite the challenges, some banks will get it right. Last month, Part 1 of the ninth annual ABA Banking Journal performance rankings reviewed the performance of the nation s largest banks and bank holding companies, thrifts, and specialty lenders. Part 2 of the rankings highlights the successes of community banks and small savings institutions that have consistently delivered outstanding returns to their shareholders. Ranking methodology For this year's rankings, community banks and thrifts were divided into four distinct groups, based on size, charter type, and corporate structure. The categories delineate types of institutions that we feel have fundamentally different financial dynamics and therefore warrant separate analysis. The groups are: Non subchapter S commercial banks and bank holding companies with consolidated total assets between $100 million and $1 billion, Non subchapter S commercial banks and bank holding companies with consolidated total assets less than $100 million, Subchapter S commercial bank corporations with consolidated total assets less than $1 billion, and Thrift institutions with total assets less than $1 billion. The big-bank rankings have been calculated on a consolidated basis for several years, but this is the first year we did the same for community banks. The change reflects the increasing diversity of business strategies among small as well as large banks. Previously, fee-generating businesses that were part of the parent company were not reflected in the rankings. Also, it was possible for a company to be on both lists--the parent on the big-bank list and some small bank subsidiaries in the community bank rankings. A consolidated ranking, we feel, reflects a truer picture of the complete business. The ranking focused on commercial banking companies. Industrial loan companies, non-deposit trust companies, institutions with less than 10% of their assets in loans or less than 10% of their liabilities in deposits, and companies with over 70% of their assets in credit card loans were excluded from the analysis. Within the four groups, institutions were ranked on five-year average return on average equity. In cases where two or more institutions had the same ROE, five-year average ROA was used as a secondary ranking criterion. The institutions with the highest ROEs were selected as the top performers in their categories. Data was obtained from SNL Securities, Inc. and reflects operations for the year ending December 31, 2000 as reported in regulatory filings. Nan-S banks from $100 million to $1 billion At the end of 2000, 1,380 banks and bank holding companies qualified for ranking in this category. …" @default.
