- W1506901776 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents measurement techniques for cells with magnetic particle labels or—in a few cases—for cells with intrinsic magnetism. A number of magnetometer devices can be used to measure the magnetic susceptibility of materials, such as Gouy and Faraday balances, and the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Although these devices are accurate, they only provide bulk measurements of materials and particles. The fundamental concept of magnetophoretic mobility enabled the design of separation systems and provided a tool for the operation and evaluation of the magnetic separation process. Given this importance, the chapter describes a method to experimentally evaluate the magnetophoretic mobility of cells and particles and provides representative measurements and mathematical relationships. An instrument has been developed that can measure the magnetophoretic mobility of cells on a cell-by-cell basis, which is in contrast to a SQUID that measures only bulk, average properties of cells or particles. In addition to tracking the movement of cells in a magnetic energy gradient, and thereby calculating the magnetophoretic mobility, it is also possible with the cell-tracking velocimetry system to track the movement of cells settling as a result of gravity." @default.
