- W1507029578 abstract "Experiments carried out on the cat reveal signs of irreversible retrograde degeneration brought about by severing the postganglionic segment of the axons of the neurones situated in the vestibular ganglion. In light microscopy they take the form of progressive chromatolysis followed by the disappearance of the perikaryon and its myelin sheath. In electron microscopy, we can follow in succession the disorganisation of the granular endoplasmic reticulum (whose ribosomes break up throughout the cytoplasm), the progressive withdrawal of the endoplasm towards the eccentric nucleus and the proliferation of the neurofilaments which multiply at ever-increasing speed until they take up all the cellular space. Simultaneously the myelin sheath breaks away, then disappears. Less than 2 weeks after the axotomy all the volume previously occupied by the perikaryon is taken up by a granular substance. After 1 month, all that is left of the neuron is its outline which is still preserved by the surrounding Schwann cell. Probably all these degenerate materials are reabsorbed by this cellular element. The multiplication of the collagenous fibers in the intercellular space probably plays a compensatory role. The irreversibility of these phenomena is no doubt attributable to the excessive diminution of axonal volume due to the lesion and perhaps to the nature of the postganglionic segment of the axons of the neurons under examination." @default.
