- W1507174347 abstract "The scientific basis for serial x-ray examinations is given in the conception of the ‘early infiltrate’ (Assmann, Redeker) the knowledge of the ‘tuberculosis inappercepta’ (Braeuning) and the value of the radiological examination as compared with physical methods. The comparative value of the different modes of detection is demonstrated by the fact that tuberculous lesions are found in 17.1 per cent of all cases sent in by their doctors, in 12.0 per cent of cases subjected to intra-familial environmental examination, in 2.9 per cent of cases subjected to extra-familial examinations and in 0.8 per cent to serial examinations. Out of 100 persons discovered to be suffering from tuberculosis and giving a favourable prognostic outlook, 37 were detected by investigations, 41 by assignment through their doctors and 64 by means of environmental examinations. In serial x-ray examinations of 1,000 healthy persons living in the environment of persons suffering from open tuberculosis one finds 100 to 150 persons requiring treatment, 20 to 50 of which were cases of open tuberculosis. In communities of children the figures amount respectively to 1–2 and 0–1 ; in communities of adolescents to 10–20 and 3–5; in communities of adults, according to their age to 2–8–15 and 1–4–8. Experience has shown that, given a satisfactory organization, the serial and environmental examinations can be carried through without difficulties and that they are of great value in detecting latent cases of tuberculosis. It is important to note that the prognostic outlook of the cases detected by serial and environmental examination is better than that of the average case of tuberculosis." @default.
