Along the way to the Ivy League, he encounters self-doubt, uncertainty, and an acknowledgment that his past experiences are both opportunities for growth and barriers to success. Cedric describes his hope for the future, a hope in the unseen: Well, thing is, I always imagined the unseen as a place, a place I couldn't yet see, up ahead, where I'd be welcomed and accepted, just for who I am. And I still feel like it is a place ... either here or somewhere else, that I'll get to someday. But first, you know, now I realize that there's work I need to do, too. I need to know--to really know--who I am and accept who I ant.... That's got to come first (p. 330). Cedric envisioned a place where he would be accepted for himself, recognizing that to achieve that goal would require a great deal of reflection and hard work. Cedric's experience is not unlike the journey we face today in nursing education: to create a future, as yet unseen, that includes a diverse nursing and nurse educator workforce. Currently only 10.7 percent of all RNs come from one or more of the identified racial and ethnic minority groups (National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses, 2004). On the positive front, data from the NLN's just published Nursing Data Review, Academic Year 2005-2006 (see page 182) show a marked increase in the percentage of prelicensure students who are members of minority groups, with the increase distributed across all racial and ethnic categories. The NLN's mission calls for the promotion of excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce. Diversity is a core value for the NLN that is consistent with the development of a culture where individuals and institutions move beyond simple tolerance to embrace and celebrate the richness of debate and dialogue based on difference. All of us are who we are today because of our distinct experiences and backgrounds. Interestingly, the most universal quality we possess is our diversity, our unique perspectives, our differences. Coming into the nursing profession from diverse backgrounds, we experience nursing and nursing education in unique ways. We teach in a wide variety of nursing education programs, and yet the overarching umbrella of our humanity and our commitment to teaching and healing brings us together as a profession. In 2007 the NLN Board of Governors affirmed a strategic goal to take the lead in strengthening our national capacity to produce an ethnically and racially diverse workforce of faculty, researchers, and pedagogical scholars who would mentor and serve as role models for future nurses and nurse educators. …" @default.
