- W1508406800 abstract "Abstract : In the Mediterranean area and its proximities (Middle East and North Africa) there are several contrasts and elements of tension due to : different political regimes, religion and cultural background; territorial claims; no uniform distribution of population; and inequities in economic resources (oil and other raw material). The area has also seen a longstanding confrontation between NATO and the USSR, as Moscow has tried to establish and then expand its military presence and influence in the Mediterranean area and even more in the Middle East. In this troubled area, the United States has a significant military presence and declared political and economic interests. This essay analyzes the situation in the area, focusing on the elements of tension, and examines the possibility that a conflict could arise for the U.S. between NATO defense needs and U.S. national interests. The analysis concludes that, even with periodic disagreements with its allies, the U.S. can achieve its objectives while the NATO countries of the area will continue to receive full benefit from the U.S. presence and actions. The United States should work to improve its coordination and consultation with its partners, within the NATO organization and on a bilateral basis. The European NATO countries, at the same time, are invited to cooperate more and coordinate their involvement to help the U.S. in resolving the various conflicts in the region." @default.
