- W1508685250 abstract "X-ray diffraction studies were carried out on lipids extracted from human serum high density lipoprotein-2 and on mixtures of commercial lipids containing varying proportions of lecithin, free cholesterol and cholesterol esters (palmitate, oleate and linoleate). Some of the mixtures were also studied after sonic irradiation in either the presence or the absence of the protein of high density lipoprotein-2 (high density apolipoprotein-2), or of its major polypeptide component (Fraction III). In the absence of protein (high density apolipoprotein-2 or Fraction III), there was no detectable mixing of cholesterol esters with the lamellar phase made of phospholipids, free cholesterol and water. This was observed irrespective of temperature. On the other hand, in the presence of high density apolipoprotein-2 (or Fraction III) there was incorporation of cholesterol esters into a water-soluble lipoprotein complex. This process occurred at the temperature of melting of the alkyl chains of the cholesterol ester mixtures, and required both protein and phospholipids." @default.
