- W1508808013 abstract "This chapter focuses on the thalamocortical neurons, which represent a major target for both acetylcholine (ACh) and nicotine. Although cholinergic nerve fibers and nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) are widely distributed in the brain, only a few sites of nicotinic cholinergic transmission are proposed. In this regard, the thalamus is a prime candidate. It possesses a very high abundance of nAChR-related transcripts and [3H] agonist binding sites, and many of its neurons are excited by local application of nicotine. As a self-administered drug, nicotine exerts multiple effects that are complicated by numerous factors. These factors include the existence of nAChR subtypes differing in agonist sensitivity and desensitization kinetics, and in other, more persistent forms of neuroregulation. An additional consideration is that nicotine may be able to activate nAChRs that are not cholinergically innervated. For example, it is likely that thalamocortical neurons receive a nicotinic cholinergic input at the somatodendritic level, but whether the same is true of thalamocortical terminals is not known." @default.
