- W1508900848 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter examines the development of manned artificial satellites and space stations. Man's exploration of space progresses in several distinct phases. The first one involves ballistic flights and short orbital missions of sounding rockets and instrument carriers to explore the characteristics of the space environment. As the capabilities of the space vehicle systems increase, these types of operations are extended in duration, range, complexity, and sophistication. The third phase concerns manned space flight operations. Starting with ballistic, suborbital, and short orbital flights, the goal is directed toward the exploration of interplanetary space, the determination of man's performance capabilities during space missions, circumlunar flights, and landings on the moon and on other planets. The problems to be investigated, among others, concern primarily the whole set of external conditions impinging upon the pilot of a spacecraft or its crew. Two major avenues of approach led to the realization of space transport. They have been staked out by the development of the modern high-performance aircraft on the one hand and by the effective utilization of ballistic rocket nosecones on the other." @default.
