- W1509389905 abstract "According to the Frame/Content theory, a syllabic “frame” for speech evolved from the elevation/depression cycle of the mandible for ingestive purposes in mammals. Following a phase of use as a rhythmic visuofacial communicative cyclicity (“lipsmack”) observable today in monkeys, this cyclicity became the basis of the close/open mouth alternation of the canonical consonant-vowel syllable. Speakers subsequently became capable of programming the frame with individual segmental “content” elements (consonants and vowels) resulting in a frame/content mode revealed today by segmental serial ordering errors which obey syllable structure constraints on the placement of consonants and vowels. Evidence for the theory includes the fact that the innate rhythmic prespeech phenomenon of babbling (e.g.: “bababa”), and subsequent early speech, exhibit a frames-then-content sequence. The fact that parental terms in languages tend to have a frame-like structure in which maternal terms tend to have nasal consonants (e.g. “mama”) and paternal terms do not (e.g. “papa”) suggests that the first spoken words had a frame-like structure." @default.
