Recently, some of us have begun to wonder why we are this way: why we can be (or must be) so vehemently ahistorical, insular, egocentric. For myself, I wonder why it is that we don't really read. By reading, of course, I do not mean simply getting to the end of a book. In this essay, I argue that the current superficial reading practices in creative writing programs are serving not only to marginalize the disci pline from the larger body of English studies but also to stifle the creative, intellec tual, and professional progress of its students.
