- W1510173789 abstract "1.1. A study of atherosclerosis and changes in circumference and elasticity in 842 aortas from the two main ethnic communities in Israel, “Ashkenazi” (Western) Jews, and “nonAshkenazi” (Eastern) Jews is reported. 2.2. The circumference of the aorta was shown to enlarge progressively as a manifestation of aging. No significant ethnic differences were observed. 3.3. The elasticity of aorta was examined by the distance of spontaneous retraction following transverse section in situ. A progressive decrease in elasticity with aging was seen to occur in the specimens studied. Here, too, no practical ethnic differences were found. The constant reduction in the elasticity of the aorta was considered to be mainly a manifestation of aging. 4.4. An increase in the mean atherosclerotic index in consecutive decades of age was observed, with no ethnic group differences. Considerable variations in the severity of the atherosclerotic process of aortas among specimens within every age group was demonstrated in most of the groups studied, whereas the data for “dilatation” and elasticity presented a remarkable degree of uniformity. This observation is presumably additional support for the opinion that atherosclerosis, though related to age changes, is dependent on various other etiologic factors. 5.5. Only an advanced degree of atherosclerosis appeared to have an enhancing influence on the circumference." @default.
