- W1510618954 abstract "The N'eel-point anomaly in the linear thermal-expansion coefficients along three mutually perpendicular directions in Mn${mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O and Mn${mathrm{Br}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O has been observed. Using the three-terminal capacitance technique, length changes were measured between 0.4 and 4.2 K with a resolution of approximately 0.02 AA{} under the best conditions. Temperature resolution was about 4ensuremath{mu}K, with points taken at 40-ensuremath{mu}K intervals near the transition. In Mn${mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O, the linear expansion coefficient along the $a$ axis, ${ensuremath{alpha}}_{a}$, is negative, while ${ensuremath{alpha}}_{b}$ and ${ensuremath{alpha}}_{{c}^{ensuremath{'}}}$ are positive. All three linear expansion coefficients are negative in Mn${mathrm{Br}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O. The temperature dependences of the thermal-expansion coefficients for a given salt are similar but not identical, in agreement with theoretical expectations. On a reduced temperature scale, the temperature dependences of the thermal-expansion coefficients for the two salts are also similar. Near the transition ($frac{|Tensuremath{-}{T}_{N}|}{{T}_{N}}l0.1$), the results can be fitted by the relations: $ensuremath{alpha}={A}_{ensuremath{-}}+{B}_{ensuremath{-}}mathrm{ln}(1ensuremath{-}frac{T}{{T}_{N}},), Tl{T}_{N}$ and $ensuremath{alpha}={A}_{+}+{B}_{+}{(frac{T}{{T}_{N}}ensuremath{-}1)}^{ensuremath{-}p}, Tg{T}_{N}$ where $p=0.30ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.06$ in Mn${mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O and $p=0.42ifmmodepmelsetextpmfi{}0.08$ in Mn${mathrm{Br}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O. Using recent high-resolution critical-region specific-heat results for Mn${mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ifmmodecdotelsetextperiodcenteredfi{}4${mathrm{H}}_{2}$O, we calculate the dependence of the transition temperature on applied stress for this salt." @default.
