- W1512844533 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the pathobiology of human papillomaviruses (HPVs). The chapter describes the infectious cycle of the high and low risk HPVs with an emphasis on those types that infect the genital tract and their interactions with the target cell for infection, the keratinocyte. Papillomaviruses (pvs) are small double stranded DNA viruses that cause a spectrum of epithelial proliferative lesions ranging from warts to cancer. These viruses have two special properties that define their biology—exquisite species specificity and tissue tropism. The species specificity is such that, the host range is absolutely restricted, thus, rabbit pvs only infect rabbits and human pvs only infect humans. The infectious cycle of the papillomaviruses is dependent on the differentiation programme of the keratinocyte. The episomal amplification is independent of the cell cycle but subsequently cell and viral episome replicate in tandem and there is episomal maintenance. No in vitro system supports productive infection of keratinocytes." @default.
