- W1513384313 abstract "The Arahura River Combined Railway-Road-Pedestrian Bridge was originally constructed in 1888, with a width of 5m to allow alternate use by trains, road and pedestrian traffic. The original bridge is shown in Figures 1 and 2. At the end of 2009, a new bridge was in place which was 216m long, had improved flood clearances and separate spaces for a single railway track, two road lanes and a pedestrian-cycleway. Some demanding project constraints had to be accommodated including: a narrow width transport corridor; need to accommodate higher flood flows with limited scope to raise the road and railway levels; area being of high cultural significance to the local Iwi; demanding environmental criteria in a currently pristine environment and the need to keep road and railway traffic flows going during most of the construction period. The final form of the bridge included: nine 24m spans which had steel through plate girders for rail and shallow pre-tensioned concrete hollow core beams for other traffic; piers and abutments which had posttensioned concrete pile caps supported on twin bored piles which were founded on steel-encased precast concrete plugs driven into dense alluvium. The new bridge is shown in Figures 3 and 4. The new structure was built in stages. Piles, caps, pedestals and some road supporting spans were constructed alongside and underneath the old bridge: while road and railway traffic continued to run on the old bridge. Single lane road traffic was then transferred onto the partially built new bridge. During the annual dairy dry season when trains are not running on the railway line, the existing bridge was then demolished and the remaining parts of the new bridge completed. Construction was achieved with a high degree of cooperation between all stakeholders and the bridge was completed several months ahead of schedule. The new bridge is owned by KiwiRail Network, designed by Novare Design and was constructed by HEB Structures. Ongoing future maintenance agreements are in place and shared between KiwiRail Network (rail spans and substructures) and New Zealand Transport Agency (road and pedestrian spans)." @default.
