- W151359501 abstract "in Los Angeles in the late sixties, Acosta simply dropped from sight in late '74, or early in '75, and has never been heard from again. He is probably dead, but given his style of frenetic movement, he may be playing the ultimate drop-out road adventure somewhere in Mex ico, Central America, or some nameless barrio; but whatever hap pened he is gone.1 If he is on the road again, however, he is now as elusive and insubstantial as the vanishing hitchhiker. Like Ellison's invisible man, he disappeared altogether to speak to us from a lower frequency, and the result was The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973), an interconnected literary record of one Chicano's develop ment of a cultural identity and a forceful, if exaggerated, political consciousness. Whatever his faults, which, according to his ene mies and friends both, were often grievous, excessive, and even inimical to the social movement, the books stand beyond the actual Ch?canos' continuing struggle for dignity and self-definition. No matter how botched the personal life may have been, Acosta's writ ing was aimed toward freedom. It is the examination of that personal life in The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo which I will focus upon in this essay.2 In writing autobiography, Acosta documents the process through which he re integrated the disparate parts of his cultural sources, realigned him self with his people's historical experience, and came at last to un derstand some truth about the reality of life for Ch?canos in North America. What he learned is that the individual and the community are not separate entities, that even when the individual is trying hardest to sever his relations with his people he is still responding to the dictates and shared life of that community.
