Technical professionals may choose to advance through one of two ladders – the management ladder or the technical ladder. Ideally, both ladders provide similar career advancement opportunities and organizational rewards. It has been suggested that providing technical professionals with career advancement alternatives can benefit employees as well as organizations. Individuals who work for organizations with dual ladder systems should experience increased job satisfaction and motivation as they are able to pursue the career path that best suits their skills, talents, and desires. Moreover, organizations that successfully implement dual‐ladder systems should be better able to attract and retain key technical professionals. However, dual‐ladder systems have also received criticism. It has been said that in some organizations, dual ladders may indeed be available, however, they are often less than equal in status and rewards.
