- W1514184110 abstract "Ten years ago Doris M. Alexander advanced the argument that the predominant intellectual pattern of Strange Interlude was to be found not in Freudian psychology but in the philosophy of Schopenhauer,1 and it may be added that her presentation was cogent and reasonable enough to merit widespread acceptance among the philosophically un oriented and the Schopenhauer devotees alike. Or, perhaps, not quite alike. Aiiss Alexander pointed to the sexual basis of love, the restless striving of will, the maintenance of the species and the final release through resignation as indications of the pervading Schopenhauer in fluence. But these specific points of comparison, since some are per haps plausibly assignable to more than one source, are not so likely to impress the initiated reader of Schopenhauer as the overall suggestive ness of the argument which tends to prove itself the more it is pon dered. For the more O'Neill's play is considered in the light of Schopenhauer, the more it becomes intuitively clear that the shoe fits, and the more impressive, and singular, that work appears. Indeed, unlike the influence of Nietzsche, which manifests itself throughout all phases of O'Neill's long career, that of Schopenhauer seems to be rather much confined to this brief interlude in his life, and to this one play. It is perhaps time to reconsider this strange drama (since Broadway has so recently seen fit to reconsider it) and particularly to draw attention to an aspect of Schopenhauer's philosophy which is not touched on by A-liss Alexander and which we take to be the most significant manifestation of Schopenhauer's influence in Strange Inter lude. We refer here to the theory of time and especially the peculiar significance of the present as they appear in The World as Will and Idea." @default.
