- W1514268580 abstract "Benthonic foraminifers are some of the most frequent and ubiquitous biogenic components of the marine late Quaternary sediments of the Oslo Fjord, which opens through the Skagerrak into the North Sea and whose hydrography is dominated by water masses entering the fjord from the Skagerrak. The main foraminiferal assemblages are limited to specific water masses with non-horizontal upper and lower boundaries. Since surface and bottom water mass hydrographies are quite independent of each other, it can be expected that shallow and deep water faunas responded in a different manner to the late Quaternary climatic fluctuations. It seems doubtful how useful benthonic foraminifers are for biostratigraphical zonations in an area which has been affected by important eustatic sea-level fluctuations and isostatic uplift of more than 200 m during the course of the last deglaciation. Historical studies of benthonic foraminifers can therefore be expected to permit reconstruction of the palaeohydrography of this fjord system rather than to be useful as biostratigraphic markers to subdivide the Holocene. Using multivariate statistical techniques, the modern benthonic foraminiferal faunas of the Oslo Fjord can be subdivided into six different assemblages which explain 90% of the variability of the census data. Bolivina cf. B. robusta is dominating the most important assemblage (27% var.) in the deepest part of the Oslo Fjord basins, but this assemblage is essentially not reaching the inner basins. Its upper limits are found at different levels along the eastern and western flank of the outer fjord. The second most important assemblage (25% var.) is dominated by Bulimina marginata and Nonion labradoricum; it is found in a narrow intermediate depth range in the outer and middle fjord; its upper limit climbs to shallower depth in the inner basins of the fjord where, however, this assemblage also occupies water depths far below its range of occurrence in the outer and middle basin. Eggerella scabra is the most abundant species of a shallow water assemblage (20% var.) of the outer and middle fjord basins, but this assemblage does not succeed to invade the inner fjord at similar depths. The remaining three assemblages are quantitatively relatively unimportant. Cassidulina laevigata, Nonion barleeanum and Hyalinea balthica characterize another outer fjord assemblage (8% var.) at intermediate water depths. Ammotium cassis and Ammoscalaria runiana are important members of an assemblage (4% var.) along the east side of the outer fjord basin, while an assemblage (5% var.) with Nonion depressulus asterotuberculatus, Ammonia batavus and Elphidium incertum is restricted to narrow and small inlets on the east and west side of the outer Oslo Fjord." @default.
