- W1514270147 abstract "Notostracans, or tadpole shrimps, are common inhabitants of temporary fresh water ponds, especially in autumn and spring. They appear to be remarkably well adapted to the extreme seasonal variability in environmental conditions that occur typically in such ephemeral water bodies. While the order has a wide geographi cal distribution, many of the included species have a restricted local distribution. It is puzzling that populations may be abundant in particular ponds is some years but completely absent in others. Their occurrence appears to be irregular, since adjacent ponds seemingly similar in ecological characteristics may differ in the abundance or presence of tadpole shrimps. The European notostracans are represented by five species from two genera and one family (Defaye et al., 1998). However, documentation of their distribution in the Iberian Peninsula has been fragmentary, mainly due to their ephemeral occurrence and to sporadic records. Thus, only two species have been reported in Iberian waters (Alonso, 1985, 1996): Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801-1802) and Lepidurus opus (Linnaeus, 1758). In a survey we conducted in spring 2001, some specimens of T cancriformis mauritanicus Ghigi, 1921 were found in water bodies (table I) of the province of Badajoz (southwestern Iberian Peninsula, area 21.776 km2, mean temperature 17?C, average annual precipitation 477 mm). The locations were shallow natural ponds or marshes with abundant aquatic vegetation, mainly Ranunculus pelta tus Schrank. Bank vegetation was dominated in all cases by Cyperus eragrostis Lamarck, Scirpus holoschoenus (Linnaeus) and Eleocharis palustris (L.) Roemer & Schultes. Co-occurring animal species were aquatic insects (hemipterans and coleopterans), crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard, 1852), anuran larvae, and in" @default.
