- W1514603916 abstract "Mechanism studies on the gamma radiation initiated reation of SO/sub 2/ and O/sub 2/ with hydrocarbons to form sulfonic acids are discussed. These studies are of theoate G values ranging as high as 7000 for certain feed stocks; show that certain types of hydrocarbons are efficient inhibie effects which throw light on the structure of the chain carrying pe of which is not explosive due to inherent quenching characteristics. The studies are of practical interest since they could lead to a radiation initiated rocess for the manufacutre of new classes of water or oil soluble detergents. Conversions in the range of 40% per Mr of absorbed radiaton were realized with cyclohexane and with pure normal paraffins varying from C/sub 6/ to C/sub 16/ in molecular weight. Data were obtained which show that C= C and tertiary C-H bonds are efficient inhibitors for the sulfoxidation reaction. Such groups may account for the low yields observed in attempts to sulfoxidize broad boiling paraffin fractions derived from petroleum. Under certain conditions the sulfoxidation reaction has been observed to continue at an appreciable rate after irradiation was stopped. It was found that this behavior in a property of arbon atoms and can be correlatedmore » with the ability of the hydrocarbon to dissolve SO/sub 2/. The mechanism for the autocatalytic reaction is rendered more plausible by the proposal of a reaction step which will automatically regulate the branch chain reaction so that it does not lead to explosion.
