- W1515040404 abstract "The first well documented report of an effort to purposely design a convective self-flow solar system was by Pope [1] in 1903. However, there are countless earlier venacular and indigenous examples going back to 3000 BC.A review of the historical developments of the use of passive solar systems can be divided into two major areas of study. These are:1Convective self-flow thermal systems.2Passive (natural) lighting systems.Within the framework of convective self-flow thermal systems there are three distinct types of convective systems: mass, liquid (thermosiphon), mass plus air. Similarly, there are two distinct types of passive lighting systems: direct beam illumination, indirect diffuse illumination.Although both passive thermal systems and passive lighting systems are concerned with the same basic electromagnetic phenomenon, each category has developed into a seperate field of study independent of the other. This paper presents a basic review of each category with some examples of each that are considered in terms of system design, performance characteristics and energy conservation criteria." @default.
