- W1515095787 abstract "Abstract A detailed bibliographic survey revealed 57 endemic taxa of Lake Biwa. These taxa comprise 50 species, five subspecies and two varieties, among which 11 species were newly described after 1990. They include two species of pleurocerid gastropod belonging to the subgenus Semisulcospira (Biwamelania) which, except in the lake itself, have been recorded only in its natural outlet, the River Seta. Several species described recently (such as eight species of chironomid; Sasa and Kawai, 1987 ; Sasa and Nishino, 1995, 1996 ), but which have an unknown geographical distribution, will probably be added to the inventory in the future. Approximately 70% of the endemic species are benthic invertebrates and 20% are fishes. Although insects are numerically dominant among the benthic invertebrates, they contain only three endemic species. In contrast, molluscs comprise almost half (27 species and two subspspecies) of the endemic species of Lakw Biwa. However, with the exception of the pleurocerid gastropod Semisulcospira (Biwamelania) , only one or two endemic species and subspecies have been reported for each respective genus or subgenus from the lake. The subgenus Biwamelania is composed of 15 endemic species, and shows the greatest variations in the number and morphology of chromosones among the species. Members of this subgenus are widely distributed in the littoral areas; some species, such as S. (B.) niponica and S. (B.) morii , are restricted to rocky and/or gravel bottoms and others, such as S. (B.) reticulata and S. (B.) arenicola , to sandy and/or muddy bottoms, and yet others, such as S. (B.) habei and S. (B.) decipiens , are widely distributed over various kinds of lake bottom. The Biwamelania group comprises a species flock. However, only one recent species, S. (B.) habei , occurs as fossils from the Palaeo-Lake Biwa formation, and it seems probable that a S. (B.) habei -like ancestor might have evolved into the Biwamelania group within the lake." @default.
