- W1515144088 abstract "This book does exactly what the title suggests; it explains to parents, and other adults living with high functioning autists, how they can adapt their own, and other’s, approach to meet their child’s needs both during childhood and later in life. It is clearly written by professionals who have considerable experience in this field, and take a practical and pragmatic approach. The first four chapters cover the technical aspects of the diagnosis of high functioning autism, the process of making the diagnosis and treatment options. These chapters are relatively brief and serve as an introduction to the topic. Parents who are knowledgeable in this field may wish to skip this first section and go straight to the meat of the matter. For those who are not up to date with the process of diagnosis and treatment, these chapters serve as a good summary and introduction to the area. The remainder of the book, which is the majority, looks at ways in which the unique challenges faced by autists, their care givers and peers, can be met. It covers common situations and challenges encountered at home and school. Social deficits are examined and ways to compensate for these suggested. The needs of adult autists are also explored and their needs, such as the transition from school to the work place, are also covered. In my experience the needs of adults with autism are often overlooked in mental health literature and mainly covered by the social sciences. The acknowledgement that high functioning autism remains a challenge in adulthood is a very welcome inclusion in this text. The author’s approach of building resiliency and skills is very practical. These authors guide parents to use the strengths of autists, rather than emphasizing their deficits and handicaps, as well as helping the caregivers recognize their own strengths and resiliency. It is an optimistic and yet realistic approach, backed up by research and experience in the field, and is appealing. Clearly public resources have never been adequate, and with the increase in need as rates of diagnosis increase, more and more parents are left in a position where they have to educate themselves so that they can advocate for their children and ensure that they do receive the services that can be made available. There were a few areas in which the book did not meet expectations. Firstly, it is obviously written by professionals rather than parents, and they often include case vignettes in a fashion that seems to following a formula for writing for parents of autists, rather than including them as a truly integrated part of the book. Consequently, instead of adding to the text, in many places these distract from it. My other concern is the clear expectation that the children and their parents live in the United States of America. No other legal or educational systems are acknowledged. Had they added, “-in The United States of America” to the title, it would have been more accurate. Another approach would be to have done a little research into services available in other countries where the book was to be published, adding a sentence or two where appropriate. This being said, I would still recommend it as a reference that should be available to parents of children with these diagnoses. It would also be a useful text for medical students and residents with an interest in this area. The appendix of resources is a valuable reference in itself. All of the web sites that we have found serendipitously over many months are listed, along with others that I cannot wait to explore." @default.
