- W1515178051 abstract "Gently sunning himself on a quiet sandy beach in Majorca late in September 1955, lay a fifty-nine year old Englishman, of medium height and build about 5' 8tall and weighing some 150 pounds with dark, greying hair, a small neatly trimmed moustache and wearing round spectacles. Few sights could be more different from the present day, with its package holidays and masses of holidaymakers flying in on huge jet aircraft, crowding the beaches, scantily clad and risking the ill effects of ultraviolet light in their anxiety to return with a deep, if short lived, tan. The Englishman was a solitary figure on a virtually deserted corner of the beach. What visitors there had been earlier in the summer had begun quickly to depart. Though he was enjoying the sun, he had no intention of risking sunburn. His was the paler complexion of one who worked, and for many years had worked, in a city; but a complexion healthily modified by the open air of the weekend golf that he enjoyed. His family his wife, two sons in their twenties, and an attractive seventeen year old niece who had come with him to Majorca, had decided not to spend the morning on the beach with him, but he did not mind being alone for a while. He normally spent far too much time in London, seeing far too many people on his way to and from the office and at the office in that bustling city. He was, in fact, a civil servant but, though no onlooker could have guessed, no ordinary civil servant, for within his office he exercised immense influence; a matter on which he very rarely allowed his mind to dwell, and which he would have dismissed with genuine surprise had it been suggested to him. As he lay peacefully relaxing on the beach, his mind drifted briefly to the future, since he was due to retire within a year. He did not wish to accept any company directorships, preferring to enjoy his retirement travelling with his wife and visiting their children and, in due course, hopefully, grandchildren. But his mind did linger longer on the past as he lazily reflected on his life and career. He had been to Rossall School at Fleetwood in Lancashire and had gone on to Caius College, Cambridge in 1914, having won an open scholarship in mathematics. The First World War had abruptly cut short his university career and he had gone to the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich as a cadet in 1915, and been commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers in 1916. He had served with the Middle East Forces in Egypt and Palestine, had been mentioned in despatches securing the surrender of a Turkish officer together with his" @default.
