- W1515209999 abstract "This chapter focuses on particle beam (PB) interfaces, which have several advantages over alternative interfacing of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with mass spectrometry (MS) for the analysis of less volatile compounds. The advantage lies in its simplicity of design and its independence of ionization options. Electron impact (EI) positive and negative chemical ionization (PCI and NCI), fast atom bombardment (FAB), and thermal surface ionization (TSI) are all accessible ionization techniques for PB/MS. The ability to collect EI mass spectral data on the analytes introduced into the MS source through the PB interface is one of its most attractive features. EI spectra are then available not only for library matching but also for the structure elucidation of unknowns based on well-rationalized EI fragmentation patterns. This chapter provides new practitioners with an understanding of the principles and pitfalls of the particle beam interface and current users with information about recent advances in the technique for potential application to their work." @default.
