- W1515617484 abstract "The Division of Advanced Automotive Power Systems Development of the Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring the development at Thermo Electron Corporation of a low-emission Rankine-cycle propulsion system for automobiles. The Ford Motor Company is contributing to the development both financially and technically. The system uses an organic-based working fluid, Fluorinol-85, and a reciprocating expander. The system has been designed to fit into the productional Ford Galaxie with modifications required only to the engine compartment and to the grill/bumper for installation of the Rankie-cycle engine. A full-scale system has been constructed and has been under laboratory test at Thermo Electron Corporation since February 1973. In setting up the laboratory test unit, a primary goal has been to duplicate operating conditions expected in the vehicle as closely as possible; the same packaging configuration as required for the vehicle has therefore been used and a facility for providing ram air at controlled temperature is used. System power and efficiency can thus be measured over the complete range of operating conditions expected in the vehicle. Measurements to date have concentrated on development of the steady-state horsepower/speed/efficiency map of the system. Expander testing has been underway since October 1972 on both a single cylinder test expander and the V-4 expander for the system. This paper presents a description of the system and the results of the expander and system testing. Acceleration performance and driving cycle fuel consumption predictions are also presented, based in part on the experimental results obtained to date. /Author/" @default.
