- W15163668 abstract "Organic reagents such as arsenazo-I, -I(, and -III, and thoron are useful for the photometric determination of U, Pu, Th, rare earths and other elements. These reagents contain sulfo groups which make them readily soluble in water, and difficult to extract with organic solvents. The negative charge on the sulfo groups can be compensated by addition of salts of heavy, hydrophobic organic cations such as organic amine salts (diphenylguanidine), tetraphenylarsonium salts, or oxonium salts formed by trubutylphosphate, BETA - napthol and cyclohexane. The proper anion must be used to compensate the plus charge of the cation. Chloride, sulfate or nutrate are sometimes used, but more hydrophobic anions such as rhodanide, perchlorate, chloracetate or trichloracetate may be required. Butyl or amyl alcohol are generally used as solvents because of their ability in replacing water of solvation. A number of practical examples are given. Thus, hexavalent uranium is extracted from weak HCl by addition of arsenazo followed by urotropine and diphenylguanidine chloride. Butyl or amyl alcohol is used to extract the rose complex. Thorium is extracted from 0.05N HCl with thoron by successive additions of monochloracetic acid, diphenylguanidine chloride, and butyl or amyl alcohol as an extractant. Extraction can be performed frommore » HCl or H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/solutions with the use of arsenazo-III reagent. The arsenazo or thoron reagent can be used to precipitate Th or U from very dilute solutions (1 to 1 x 10/sup 9) by addition of methyl violet or some other basic dye.
