- W151647500 abstract "The reaction to enteric antigens is complex and variable, with gut-associated lymphoepithelial tissue (GALT) having a wider range of responses than was previously thought. Intraluminal antigens which are not broken down by digestive enzymes may be bound by immunoglobulins delivered to the lumen by intestinal secretions, bile, and pancreatic juice; these secreted immunoglobulins represent end products of prior GALT stimulation. Antigenic macromolecules may be transmitted and broken down by epithelial cells, particularly the specialized follicle-associated epithelial cells (FAE) found between lymphoid nodules of GALT and the intestinal lumen. FAE has also been shown to be capable of transmitting macromolecules from blood vessels to the intestinal lumen, and therefore may transmit antibodies in the region of potential absorption of antigens, thereby modulating entry of those antigens. Macrophages capable of phagocytizing antigens have been demonstrated in the epithelium covering Peyer's patches (PP) as well as in the PP lymphoid follicle. Plasma cells have been localized in the epithelium and immediately beneath it in PP, in close association with a capillary plexus. The generation of suppressor cells from PP has been demonstrated. This information indicates that GALT possesses the full range of immunological reactive capabilities, from initial pinocytosis and/or phagocytosis of antigen, to presentation to T and B cells, through differentiation into plasma cells secreting specific antibody, and including modulation of the immune response through generation of suppressors and perhaps secretion of antibody into the lumen locally." @default.
