The effects of sphericity depend on the horizontal scale of the motions of interest. Although the vertical motions may be of considerable intensity in the oceans and the atmosphere such as deep convection, on the synoptic scale average the typical horizontal velocities are at least two orders of magnitude larger than the vertical ones.
