- W1517316418 abstract "This paper examines the learning goals that community-based learning courses are supposed to accomplish and assesses the extent to which a CBL course that I taught in the Spring 2009 meant these stated objectives. The course “Poverty and Political Voice” was explicitly designed to avoid the simple “soup kitchen model” of service; rather than grafting the service on top of an existing syllabus, I chose the sites first and then wrapped the course content and assignments around the service. Though the number of students in the course was too small to make broad generalizations from, in the end, I was able to demonstrate that experiences in the community and at service sites made the course material much more engaging and relevant to students. However, showing gains in attitudes that foster political activism was much more difficult to accomplish. This paper closes with a discussion of the kinds of goals instructors of CBL courses in political science can reasonably hope to accomplish using this instructional method and reflections on ways in which colleges and universities can better integrate CBL courses into the student experience so as to foster greater civic and political activism." @default.
