- W1517370973 abstract "In the early 1990s the terminology used to classify diabetes mellitus was based mainly on the approach used to treat the condition; “insulin dependent” or “non-insulin-dependent” diabetes. Guidelines recommend categorizing diabetes into four groups: Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and specific types of diabetes due to other causes. This chapter explores the specific types of diabetes due to other causes. The evidence for screening for hereditary haemochromatosis among individuals with pre-existing diabetes is lacking. Although cystic fibrosis-related diabetes shares many similarities with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, it represents a distinct form of diabetes. Diabetes is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Several disorders resulting in hormone excess can cause diabetes including Cushing's syndrome, acromegaly, hyperaldosteronism, hyperthyroidism, pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma, glucagonoma and somatostatinoma. Post-transplantation diabetes mellitus predicts graft failure/function, mortality, infection and micro-/macro-vascular complications of diabetes. Monogenic diabetes represents a diverse group of conditions with varied presentations and underlying genetic causes." @default.
