- W1517487279 abstract "Increasingly, theorists in cultural studies and composition theory are using as a guiding metaphor for how people might work and live with their differences. has become a buzzword, and we hear regularly of the possibility of negotiating identities, meanings, and borders?even our very differences. In fact, there is much optimism lately about the possibility of negotiating difference. Certainly, most of us want to be optimistic about living with and communicating our differences. After all, the objective of focusing on difference, at least according to many postmodern thinkers, is to argue for the right to be different, to argue for a conception of the civitas based on difference and dissensus, not necessarily on conformity and uniformity. Negotiation as a rhetorical strategy can help us rethink the connections between the public sphere and students' writing, and it can also be a productive way to think of classroom interaction. However, because negotiation can also act as a strategy of coloni zation disguised as civil interaction, and because we don't hear much critical discussion about what negotiation actually means to those who use this term, it poses problems. Thus, it would serve us well to bring some critical pressure to bear on the concept of negotiation as it has been traditionally conceived and theorized, especially regarding matters of difference." @default.
