• W1517499420 abstract "Zinc (Zn) is a micronutrient that is often deficient in arid and semi arid regions of the world. A field experiment was conducted in two consecutive seasons (2002/2003 and 2003/2004) to investigate the response of nine local hexaploid wheat cultivars to Zn application and to assess the effect of wheat genotypes for Zn efficiency. Soil at the experiment sites was deficient in Zn (0.2 mg kg -1 ). Two foliar treatments were applied twice for each of the two growing seasons according to the physiological stage of each cultivar (tillering stage, 3-weeks later). The first treatment (-Zn) was conducted by spraying the nine wheat cultivars with a mixture of 90 ppm from Lepral–Fe (13%) + 90 ppm from Nervanaid–Mn (13%). The second treatment, 90 ppm from Nervanaid–Zn (15%) was added to the above-mentioned mixture. The results showed that foliar zinc spray increased grain yield (Ton/fed.), shoot Zn-concentration (μg/g DW), shoot uptake of zinc (mg/plant). Based on visual Zn-deficiency and relative yield reduction, Sahel-1 and Sakha-8 were the most sensitive genotypes, Giza-168 and Sakha-93 were intermediate, and Sids-1 and Gemmieza-7 were the most tolerant genotypes to Zn deficiency among the tested cultivars. Genotypes with better growth performance such as Sids-1 and Gemmieza-7 can be recommended for Zn deficient soil and for breeding purposes. Future investigations on genetic Zn-efficiency in cereals, as well as studies integrating genetic and physiological analyses of Znefficiency mechanisms, will certainly be needed to support this research." @default.
