- W1517804549 abstract "It is pointed out that high temperature corrosion plays an important role in the development of many combustion and coal gasification processes. Several studies have been concerned with the protection provided by oxide scales to environments containing H2S. In the present investigation, the protection provided by an Al2O3 scale in a simple simulation of a coal gasification environment is studied. FeCrAl, FeCrAlY, and FeCrAlHf alloys, which form Al2O3 scales, have been exposed to oxidizing/sulfidizing environments at 900 C. Preoxidation to form a barrier layer of Al2O3 to prevent the formation of FeS was successful if the preoxidation times were short. However, thicker oxide scales were less successful. These observations suggest that sulfur penetration by lattice or grain boundary diffusion was unlikely to be important. 16 references." @default.
