- W151787670 abstract "I'm an impatient person. I hate to wait … at doctor's offices, banks, grocery store check-out lines … you name it. I'm impatient, too, about research. Why does it seem to take so many years to get an answer to a research question? Then why does it take so long for a great answer to be integrated into practice?I know the answers to these questions. I have been involved in clinical trials, where it takes years to enroll enough subjects, perform interventions, analyze and write results, and get them finally published. I have been involved in the revisions of textbooks based on data that rely on data that is current at the time of revision, but by publication date, it is already “old news.” I know the perseverance it takes to complete a graduate degree. As I take a step back from my impatience, I remind myself of what I often tell my students: we are not preparing you for practice today but for what practice will be in 10 years. I rely on them to be the agents of change that help to get new research integrated into practice. I know clinical instructors look to students to bring that current research to them and it is one of the reasons that they continue to be clinical instructors. In this issue of the Journal, we have the Linda Crane Lecture, which is a reflection by Sandy Cassady on what has happened in health care teams in the last several years. Only by being patient and persevering can effective teams be created and maintained.Sometimes, we have to take what feels like a step back in time to prove that what we “know” is actually true. Perme and colleagues have taken a systematic approach to the question of mobilizing patients with invasive lines. While many of us “old timers” would say “we used to do (or not do) that in our day,” often we lack the evidence to show what we know. Other times, we are proven wrong. Studies like this take time and patience, but they provide practice-changing evidence. In the same vein, Scheiderer and colleagues bring us evidence from the literature about how to exercise a patient following implantation of invasive cardiac support devices. All of this information is critical to help move practice toward being appropriately aggressive in critical care environments.Other times, we need to know what we know. Van Zant and colleagues bring us a study regarding physical therapists’ knowledge about disease prevention. While we are hearing about wonderful initiatives regarding wellness and health promotion in physical therapy, it is important to see how far this message is penetrating. Similarly, Loprinzi and Pariser examine the physiological effects of diabetes on fitness—more evidence about the role of physical therapy in primary and secondary prevention. So, while I remain an impatient person at heart, I am happy to see that others are taking the time to patiently collect data and synthesizing literature on these critical issues so that research can help advance our practice. Remember, patience is a virtue!" @default.
